Food Waste Diversion – We’re constantly monitoring our purchasing to minimize waste. We heavily discount prior to expiration date, re-purpose in our cafes, donate to local agencies, our compost is picked up by Blue Planet, we also give compost & other outdated suitable products to Zero Waste YYC. Zero Waste YYC is connecting businesses with excess food to individuals and families who will need it most. They facilitate the rescue and re-distribution of food from food providers including restaurants, hotels and catering companies to service agencies within disadvantaged communities.
We recycle our used cooking oil in our cafe! Eco Dine, a zero waste, local recycling company, picks up the used cooking oil and is refined at their facility, which is made into useful products. The cooking oil waste is also used in the renewable energy sector of biofuels, which helps in reducing environmental pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.
Composting – Compostable waste takes up about 40% of Calgary’s landfill space, which is expected to run out within 20 years. For every 1 pound of food in landfill, there are about 4 pounds of methane emissions, which is the equivalent of 100 pounds of CO2 emissions. Community Natural Foods composts approximately 42,000kg of waste annually. The compost created at Strickland farms is used directly on the farm to reduce the need for fertilizers and improve soil health. Recycling – At our stores and head office, we use a private operator to recycle plastics, cardboard, paper, glass, tin and beverage containers. Recognizing the impacts of kitchen waste (it creates harmful methane gas when in a landfill environment), we compost at all our locations as well. When we do have expired product, our staff take the time to separate the compostable materials from recycling and dispose of correctly.
Reducing Food Miles – We work with local farmers and producers whenever possible to strengthen our local economy and reduce the footprint of the products we carry. We have formed relationships with producers of a wide variety of producers that represent everything from produce (carrots, beets, potatoes, tomatoes, etc.), grains and cereals, dairy products, mustard, honey, and fresh and frozen meats.
While we highly recommend bringing your reusable bulk and produce bags we are proud of the impact our compostable bags have had on the reduction of plastic in the environment. Our compostable produce and bulk bags are derived 100% from plants using non-GMO corn. Since the launch of our compostable produce/bulk bags in 2021 we have diverted 2 million pieces of plastic from the environment.

We’ve teamed up with Plan Bee Calgary, a local beekeeping business dedicated to illuminating the wonders of bees and the vital role they play in our ecosystem. Together, we’re on a mission to not only educate but also foster a deeper appreciation for the importance of honeybees and pollination.
Plan Bee Calgary believes learning how to keep bees safely and responsibly in Calgary is important, but they also recognize that introducing non-native honeybee hives has the potential to impact the local environment.
By leveraging expert knowledge through a speaker series hosted by Community Natural Foods, and promoting native plants and seeds to support native insects we can, for example, increase the variety and abundance of forage for all insects, reducing the competition between species.
In May of 2024, we set up a honeybee hive at the Community Natural Foods Crowfoot Market. It’s an opportunity for our customers and employees to discover a direct connection between managed honeybees and the survival of all native bee species, and the tools needed to give all bees added resilience to external pressures.

Single Use Plastic Water Bottle Free – We were Calgary’s first retail store to go single-use plastic water bottle free. Instead we offer a number of alternative options from home filtration to stainless steel water bottles with filtration on them
BYOC Program – We have offered Bring Your Own Container since we came into business in 1977. You can bring your own clean bags and containers to fill up with any of our bulk products instead of a plastic bag. To learn more on how BYOC works, click HERE
Bulk – We carry over 150 bulk items including the largest selection of bulk medicinal herbs in the city; a great selection of alternative sweeteners, flours, and keto/paleo baking mixes; and bulk cleaning, beauty and culinary liquids
Increasing Efficiencies In Our Stores:
Alternative Ways to Heat Water – Fifty per cent of our head office hot water heating is solar powered. Ninety per cent of our hot water at the Crowfoot Market is from re-claimed refrigeration heat. And at our 10th Ave and Chinook Markets we use the heat from refrigeration to help heat the delivery areas.
Air Curtains – We have air curtains at the entrance of every store that keeps the elements out and the climate in.
LED Lighting – Whenever possible we use led lighting and low-energy consumption lighting.
Reverse Osmosis Water – All the water is sprinkled on our produce and used to wash produce and cook the food in our cafes and our commissary is put through the reverse osmosis system.
Cleaning Products – We have moved away from harsh toxic chemicals. Our objective is to be 100% toxin and environmentally damaging product-free. We’re almost there.
Building Supplies – When we do construction we re-use or give to Habitat for Humanity for re-use wherever possible. We also purchase second-hand whenever possible.
Load shedding – on a hot day when you know equipment will be running on full, we look at what devices we can shut down for the day
Night curtains – that we cover our open refrigerators with at night be reduce energy consumption.
Preventative Maintenance – We prioritize preventative maintenance to make sure product is working efficiently and lasts longer. This includes our corporate vehicles.
