    COVID-19 Updates

    March 26, 2020

In order to ensure the safety of our staff and customers, we have made the following changes:

    • we can no longer accept reusable produce bags (ie. knitted bags, reused plastic bags, etc). We have compostable produce bags in our produce section that you are welcome to use. These compostable bags can go in the City of Calgary green bins
    • customers are still encouraged to bring their own grocery bag, however customers will need to pack their own bags
    • we are montioring the amount of people in our stores at any given time to ensure we are abidding by a 50 person maximum
    • we kindly ask that you are mindful that you are only touching produce and other products that you plan to buy
    • we’ve made the choice to temporarily suspend our bulk program. Store willl no longer have any bulk foods or herbs available for the timing being.

Thank you for your continued support as we work together in these difficult and ever-changing times.

Given the sales volume of bulk products, it is our assessment that many of our customers continue to feel they are essential products. As we continue to observe the guidelines and requirements of Alberta Health Services, we have adopted several additive protocols to maintain the cleanliness of the bulk bins and the bulk areas.

    The following processes are currently in place;

    • Hand sanitizers are available throughout the stores, for use by staff and customers.
    • We have disposable gloves available for staff, and for those customers who wish to use them.
    • We have implemented regular (2 hr cycle) preventative and sanitizing protocols, both by CNF staff & by cleaners. These include wiping down door handles and bathroom sanitizing.
    • We have implemented cleaning of all high-touch surfaces in the store including shopping carts, hand baskets, check-out counters, scales, POS equipment, scoops, tongs, utensils, etc. This process is repeated every 2 hours, and in some cases, more frequently
    • Our Bring Your Own Container Program is on hold across all departments (now including the bulk section)

We are monitoring the announcements by our governments and health officials and intend to act with their guidance. If any recommendations are made that require us to pivot we are prepared to do so. In the meantime, we are confident that we are taking all of the appropriate steps to ensure the safety of our customers.

In order to accommodate our customers in other parts of the store, we are pausing the following services:

    • hot bar
    • salad bar
    • beverage bar
    • burger, burrito & pizza bar
    • Kombucha on tap (bottled product still available

We are also removing Change for the Earth tokens as aprecautionary measure. We still encourage you to bring in your clean reusable grocery bag but you will not receive a physical token for it, rather we will be dividing the bag credits evenly amongst the 3 local charities.

Product testers have also been removed.

    Thank you for your understanding.

As the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) continues to have an increased impact in our community, it is understandable that you may be experiencing an increased level of concern.

As a valued Community Natural Foods customer, your safety has always been, and continues to be, our number one priority. During this time we are taking a number of preventative measures to keep everyone safe. These include:

Our BYOC program for bulk will continue as is. We are pausing BYOC in our cafes. Please use our glass or ceramic cups, mugs and plates for your beverages and salad/hot bar at our 10th Ave and Crowfoot locations. At our Chinook store, we have compostable cups, bowls and plates. They will need to be composted at the store. Thank you for your desire to lessen your environmental footprint and for understanding our need to pause this part of BYOC for the next while.

Kombucha on Tap has been paused. You can still get TrueBuch and Happy Belly kombucha in bottles in our grab and go coolers.

Demos and Events have been paused. We are looking at offering our upcoming events in a webinar format. Keep an eye out for those opportunities in the coming weeks.

We are also pausing our Holds program and ask that you do not call our customer care line to find out about inventory availability, as our counts are changing so rapidly that an accurate count would not be available. Please come into the store or order online.

In addition to the strict cleaning and sanitizing guidelines already in place at our stores and workplaces, we are also taking additional steps to ensure the safety of our members and team members.

    These include:

    • Increasing our focus on sanitizing commonly used areas including cashier stations, food service areas, shopping carts, baskets and bathrooms.
    • Following the recommendation of all major public health agencies including AHS and PHAC to encourage all customers and staff to regularly wash their hands using water and soap which is readily available at all stores.
    • Ensuring our staff have the information they need to stay healthy and encouraging any staff who feel unwell to stay home.
    • Providing our staff with a wellness package that include immune support products, and providing hand sanitizer at all stations that are not in close proximity to a hand washing station.

At Community Natural Foods we continue to believe that the body has an amazing ability to heal. Please continue to give your body the nutrients it needs to function optimally and fill in the gaps with supplements. Practice good hygiene, particularly hand-washing, embrace physical-distancing, not social distancing. We need each other during times of crisis, we just don’t need to be in close physical contact. And during any stressful time, listen to your body and practice self-care techniques like getting fresh air or taking a long, hot bath.
